The History

Sutter Creek was founded in 1848 by Captain John Sutter, the same year that gold was discovered in California. The town was originally known as “New Jerusalem” and was one of the first settlements in the area. Sutter Creek got its current name in 1849, when John Sutter’s nephew, Henry Miller, laid out the town site. Miller named the town after his father, Augustus Sutter.
